Judaism and Jewish Experience in the Czech Republic: Pilsen

In Pilsen we do not have an Old Jewish town like Prague, however, Franz Kafka, Rabi Löw (Jehuda Ben Becalel) and his famous Golem (created by Maharal), already emphasised, that Pilsen has the 3rd biggest synagogue in the world – the Great Synagogue!

Pilsen was highly occupied by Jewish community, therefore the Jewish religion has strong presence in Pilsen history and modern time. During the second world war most of the Jews were deported to the Nazi concentration camps; there, you will find the traces of Pilsner Jewish merchants, craftmen and other community members. You will also touch the Old Synagogue and the Garden of memories with over 3,000 stones with the names of Jews deported to Terezin concentration camp. Once in a while you will pass by the so called Stolpersteine. You will visit the old and new Jewish cemeteries with Hebrew lettering, and listen how live Pilsner Jews now.
